My daughter lay in bed with me this morning saying a sweet little prayer.

Then she starts giggling.

I ask her why she is laughing.

She tells me: "God's power tickled me".

What are you leaving in 2011, and what are you taking with you in to 2012?

I went to the local church the other Sunday. Haven't been to church for ages and what with sick kids and being very unorganized did not have time to make the trip in to our church. So off to the local, small church I went.

They were lovely people and the Pastor asked us the above question.

Has really had me thinking.

What do I want to leave in 2011....what do I want to take with me in to 2012???

I would like to leave behind the stress we have had with my husbands work - think this can be ticked off with a new position/promo that starts for him in the new year!

Depression can definitely be left. Along with the mildly anxious, short tempered, grumpy version of myself (all associated with depression). Working on this, not easy though.

Earthquakes can stay in 2011 too.

Taking with me my loving, understanding family.

Friends that love and support us.

Happiness, positivity, patience, love, laughter.

Continue to be grateful for our amazing home, school and community.

So still thinking on this.

Growing up

Yesterday I saw my wee girl grow up before my eyes.

I went to the school's carols on cushions, she came up and snuggled into me, still my baby. Then her class was called up on stage, off she ran, and pushed her way to the front to sing and dance and giggle with her friends.

She came back too cool to sit with her Mumma (until one of the other girls in her class hijacked my lap - then I had two girls wanting attention!).

Later I collected her from school and she told me off for coming to meet her instead of letting her make her own way.

Rangi (who is having his turn as the chickenpox kid) had fallen asleep in the car, so we went to the dairy to get an ice cream each, which we ate in the car at the playground. Then my girl jumped out of the car and played while I sat in the car with her sleeping brother.

This is when I saw her grow up.

She climbed up high using one arm - ice cream in other - she negotiated her way to the top and the bottom several times. She frightened herself a couple of times as her balance wavered. I covered my mouth and resisted the pull to go to her...she was fine and she knew it, she didn't need my help.

Then she flung herself tummy first onto the swing and flew through the air, smiling and giggling as she went higher and higher. Again she frightened herself, but corrected her balance and beamed with pride. Again I had resisted the pull to run to her. She looked to me with a smile and I smiled back giving her the 'thumbs up' to show her I knew she was doing great.

Months back she would never have done this. Her confidence has grown, her strength and trust in her body has grown too.

I felt so proud in this small moment. Full of love. I'm glad I took the time to sit back and watch.

With this comes a little attitude. Hmmmmm we don't like that so much but we'll work on it.

Loads to be thankful for:

The washing basket is filling up, the house is full of giggles,, shouting, noise, fun. All these things indicating Daddy is home and us three that didn't jet off to Melbourne are so happy for his return. We missed him and love him!

I got a super cool pressie which I am typing away on now. Loving all the great apps. So very spoilt.

My big boy is toilet training. Good days and bad days - but he is excited and we are all ready for this growing up stage.

Bubble is pox-less (still spotty but not sick or contagous anymore) and returned to school today. She was not excited. When I left she seemed to be back in the swing of things.

Titrangi Mum's Craft fair - I went for the first time last night and was so impressed with the clever crafty people. I left with a gift for each of us. If you live over this side of Auckland it is worth a look.

Looking forward to a relatively quiet weekend.

Bored

I am so so so bored!! My housework is all done, dinner has been cooking away all day. The kids are entertaining themselves. The washing is all up to date - folded and even put-away. I made hummus from scratch, and a healthy salad for me. We've walked to the beach, paddled, threw sticks for the dog. Just about died as the dog finally caught the bum end of a duck...grrrr (but quietly it did look kinda of funny, and the duck is fine just less a couple of fluffy feathers).

I want my husband home.

I want my girl to be all healed (just waiting for them to crust over now I think).

I feel like I'm under house arrest.

Conversation with a three year old and a five year old isn't satisfying me intellectually (suprisingly!!).

Am over kids jokes: Why did the chicken cross the road? To get the dairy (Yip, I know....)

Rangi keeps helping himself to drinks of milk/juice/water- which would be fine if he didn't spill it every.single.time!

I've done all the Good Mummy things to interact with the kids.

I'm out of wine (have allowed myself to enjoy a glass once the kids are in bed for the night) so don't even have that to look forward to tonight.

Yesterday I even got out the sewing machine and re-fashioned a long-sleeve top which was on its way to the rubbish.

I keep checking facebook - nothing happening, and if there is I don't want to leave too many comments as am sure I will look like a loser with no life - which I kind of am (the no life part, not the loser - not yet anyway).

I don't want to bake as I would probably eat it all out of BOREdom...

Muh and Blah - might go put a dvd on.

Howdy strangers...I've had a looooong break from blog posting, I don't think the drought is over but I do want to write today.

Things have been kinda busy round here.

What with settling into our home, Bubble settling into school (maybe a bit too settled now as I got told she was a great role model), working two part-time jobs as well as being wife/mother extraordinaire (Pffttt - if only).

But things have been going along rather nicely. Then this week Bubble comes home from school with chickenpox. I am surprised she has got to 5 and a half without catching them, so not a huge deal. Oh except we are suppose to fly to Melbourne two days later...

So me and the kids are at home. Bubble is covered, a bad dose I think. She is quite miserable, but knows it will be better in a few days.

Gutted not to be going to Melbourne, but it is shown me that we are very blessed and have a lot to be thankful for:

We had taken out insurance only days earlier
A sister who offers to have Bubble while we are gone
Friends who offer the same
The lady at the chemist (a complete stranger) who offers to babysit for us once my husband gets back from Melbourne and Bubble is all better
My parents who just happen to be up here this weekend
A husband who loves and misses us - even though he is on holiday with his whanau
A forced slow-down - a break from school lunches, rushing to get dressed and out the door in the morning, spending time working on the computer
Time to play, and snuggle, and comfort my kids (it's not all happy families, but it is good)

I hate seeing my girl sick, like really hate it. But I am thankful for the reminder of just how blessed we are.

Mrs Readalots Book Club....

Thank goodness I suggested two books this month.

I read The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd a year or two ago and LOVED it. I can't remember it in enough detail to review except to say that I adored most of the characters and shed quite a few tears. If you read this book I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and I look forward to reading your reviews.

So when I was in the library at the end of last month and saw Traveling with Pomegranates by Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter Ann Kidd Taylor I thought it would be worth a read. Sadly I did not finish it. I wanted to...but I just couldn't get through it.

It had potential - I liked the idea of a mother daughter story, written by a mother and daughter. I liked that they were both using the same trip to deal with different personal issues. And some of the writing was beautiful. But it just didn't draw me in enough.

It was a bit too wishy-washy for me. Too many symbolic moments for me.

Back in 5....

I sat at the computer thinking i would write a late Things I'm Loving post.

But now I sit here typing that I think I will take a blog break. May be a 5 minute, 5 hour, 5 week break - who knows?? I just know that life is busy at the moment. Lots of challenges but lots to love.

I am so very happy in our new home. Feeling blessed for our own little piece of paradise.

Dealing with the new phase our 5 year old school girl is going through, and the change it seems to have made to the brother/sister love. So very exhausting at the moment.

I know I need to be more active (in everything) so sitting at a computer is not really the most useful way to spend the precious time I have (not for me, not right at the moment anyway!!)

So if you want to hang out and see if/when I come back - Thank you. If you want to leave, that's okay, I won't be offended.

And to those I follow - think I will still pop in and visit when time allows.

Um Hi (said shyly and slightly embarrassed) haven't been here for ages.

LIFE has been mad crazy.

You know I was sick so won't bother telling you about that again - except to say I am all healed (apart from a cracked rib caused by coughing!!).

You know we went to Christchurch - it snowed...not as much as this week apparently.

You know we were moving house - we are in now and loving it. Maybe a post on this later.
Did I tell you Bubble started school?

Did I tell you I started part-time work? Two days a week at Rangi's preschool.

Hmmm what else???

Not much socialising going on due to all the above. Did get to see my lovely friend Widge while in CHCH - she is awesome! Have had a few lunches/coffees/unpacking sessions (THANKS!) with Simone and Scrag.

And this Saturday I am off to the big Bloggy lunch in North Shore.
Me - who hasn't been blogging lately, and has a handful of followers (35 amazing, awesome followers btw!), is not up on blogger stats, does not craft....think I may be out of my element maybe?? But looking forward to seeing all the Blog Superstars. And catching up with those I have met/know, cause they are all pretty special.

Are you??? I have been MIA for some time now. Still don't have time to catch up on your posts, but will do once I am back in Auckland next week (and once we get connected to internet again).

Thought I would give you a quick update.

Thank you for all you prayers.

I had Bronchitis, Tonsilitis and Larynjitis (sp??)

I was completely out of action. So very sick.

Then things got worse...a second doctors visit got me on some anti-nausea and anti-biotics. I had an allergic reaction and ended up getting ambo ride to hospital in the middle of the night. I struggled to breath and had weird face distortions, and had problems writing. So so so scary!! After an hour or so the doctor worked out the problem and gave me a couple of jabs which sorted it all out.

Still whacked we flew to Christchurch almost 2 weeks ago and I have only started visiting friends yesterday.

My nice relaxed two weeks is now all squeezed into a few days of quickie visits.

Christchurch is breaking my heart too. Earthquake scars apparent on every street, and every face. I had to go to the town I grew up in (Kaiapoi) and was so sad to find so many buildings just gone.

Miss you all. Will catch up properly once we go back to Auckland on Monday, and move into our new house. Haven't organised internet yet...must add that to my to do list!

Man I'm sick

like really really sick.

I have been in bed for a full week now. Excluding two doctors visits.

It really sucks.

I have no idea how people purposely starve themselves. I can't eat at the moment and it feels like crap!

Oh and we moved out of our rental this week just been.

Thank God for an amazing husband who has single handedly moved and cleaned house. All while caring for two kids and sick me.

And it was Bubble's birthday party, then her birthday, and then her last day at preschool. All day pretty much without me.

We fly to Christchurch on Monday, I am praying I am up to it.

Miss you all - but can't get brain working to read or post.

NOVEL ABOUT MY WIFE

Emily Perkins

I bought my copy off Trade Me, and bonus it's signed by Emily herself!!!

I finished this book last night and am not really too sure what I want to write about it.

I loved some of the amazing passages of writing. Such beautiful words that drew me in. The first few lines got me...

But then I got confused.

I would be reading a paragraph and somehow would keep losing track of which character was talking.

And did I miss what N.A.M.W. meant at the beginning of each 'Fiji' section??

Some of the plot was a little annoying, and the relationship seemed doomed for failure due to either money, dishonesty, mental health. They loved each other though and I liked that.

I think that Hallie, and 'that guy' were ghosts of Ann's past in Australia. Was Hallie part of what happened to her?? I think she was hurt badly and ran.

I have to say there were times when I was not convinced that Tom was writing this story, seemed to have a feminine edge to it.

I did fall for the characters. I did like the idea of the plot and Tom's whole-hearted love of Ann.

So yes, I did like it overall and would actually like to read it again to see what I missed. Since finishing it I am kind of more intrigued by it.

Overload

I was going to link in with PaisleyJade's Loving this week...but honestly although I do have plenty to be grateful for I am in overload, and finding it hard to compile a list due to

Sleep deprivation
Boy in hospital
Finding tenants for the rental we are in (done)
Realising that we have 2 weeks today to get packed up and cleaned up and outta here
Also realising that there is a THREE week gap between leaving this place and moving into our new home
Bubble doing school visits in our new hometown (only a one hour drive in rush hour traffic
Bubble being very apprehensive and clinging like a paua at the school visits
Trying to get motivated to pack up (third time in 12 months)
Battling to keep my mood and energy levels high through all this

So here are some of the things whizzing round my wee brain at the moment.

Whilst snuggling Rangi in hospital I thought about how all our babies are made to fit us just right. The way they snuggle up on your lap, with their head tucked under your chin. The comfort they get from just holding them, listening to each other breath. A gentle back rub, a little sway, fingers run through his hair...all offering him the love and reassurance he needed.

I was saddened by the number of family violence posters all over the hospital ward. Have things got that bad?

I watched Eat Pray Love last night. I was prepared for ho hum. But I kinda liked it. Maybe low expectations can be a good thing. Didn't get any amazing revelations, but was a good watch.

Cleaning up dog poo after days of rain sucks! But it is still a preferred job to do over packing!

Pinterest: a question: Why do people insist on taking photos of their tattoos while they are still red and swelling?

Why oh why is Bubble's 5th birthday right smack bang in amongst us packing, moving and looking for a temporary home?

Feeling sorry for the electrician who came early the other day. I was in the shower and had to answer the door dripping wet with a towel and bathrobe on and tell him to come back.

Amazed at the cut-throatness of the Auckland rental market. One woman tried to talk badly about another potential tenant to the landlord...some people.

Love that when I say "One Two Buckle my..." to Rangi he answers "SEATBELT!!"

Love that Bubble has asked me to invite Tinkerbell to her birthday.......

Can't wait to get into our new home

That's all...well not really, but that's all for now...

My boy has been sick.

Four doctors visits in the last two weeks.

Twenty-four hours in hospital.

One chest x-ray.

Two parents who have been worried about their sweet wee boy.

One sister who has been so patient while not being the centre of attention (think time is up on that one!).

Three lots of medicine.

Two inhalers.

One great view of the Sky Tower (which Rangi loves!).

Five nights with stuff all sleep.

Lots of friends offering help and prayers - thank you x

BUT he is on the mend.

And we are relieved and grateful.

Prayers answered for amazing doctors/nurses at hospital and a speedy recovery.

So for those of you who read my silly Happy post, I can now let you know that

WE HAVE BOUGHT A HOUSE

And we LOVE it!

It is in the bush (kind of).

A big section.

Tranquil (til we get there anyway).

A 2 minute stroll to the local beach.

Less to the brand spanking new kids playground.

On the same road as the primary school.

I We can not wait to get there.

Apparantly we will be Westies

(must go stock up on black jeans, leopard print tops, hairspray, Woodstock and Cola...kidding!)

We will have the space to grow our veges.

Maybe plant a few fruit trees.

Build a pizza oven.
Chickens?

Can't wait (said that already!!).

When we moved to Auckland in August last year we never saw this happening.

What makes it the weekend for you (apart from having kids at home, dreaming of sleep ins that don't happen, and maybe having your significant other at home to help share the load)??

In our house Saturday mornings begin this way:

Kids convince Daddy to get out of bed to make surprise pancakes or crepes for me.
I get told to STAY IN BED.
I fake disappointment, but happily snuggle back into my duvet enjoying having the whole bed to myself.
The amazingly patient Jean-Claude lets the little ones help make pancake batter, even letting them crack the eggs. He then carefully picks out all the egg shell whilst telling the kids what a great job they have done.
Kids run in and yell STAY in bed Mumma we're making you a surprise. Followed by them telling me its pancakes (they suck at surprises!!).
Dadda bakes pancakes.
Kids get louder and impatient. Start fighting a little.
Pancakes cooked.
I get told GET OUTTA BED!!
I come to the table where two proud kids display their efforts while stuffing their faces.
Jean-Claude puts down the biggest pancake and tells Bubble to leave it alone he will back for it in a minute.
Bubble gigglingly steals big pancake = hilarious.
Jean-Claude returns to table fakes horror at pancake being gone.
Rangi laughs til he just about wets himself (or maybe he does wet himself, but seeing as he is wearing a nappy we will never know!).
Music gets turned up.
Kids dance and dance. Make us get up and dance with them.
Dance off continues for about half and hour before we start clean up and get on with our day.

I LOVE this. Makes me fill with happiness and love for my special wee family.
If you visit for brunch you will need to bring your dancing shoes.

Mostly am loving last weekends exploring

A sunny day in winter

Sausages, bread and tomato sauce for lunch (even when someone forgot the frying pan, thank goodness for all those survival type programmes - we found a solution!)

And these guys are pretty special too...

A week of homemade soup, homemade bread, apple sponge and other yummies

Two lots of yoga this week. Equals 3 hours me time - albeit sweating my butt off!

Pinterest - another terribly addictive computer time waster.

These words I found have stuck with me...

Hairdressers that make me brave enough to try a fringe (a beginner fringe anyways).

And woah you should see plans for the next appointment...exciting. (Pinterest may give you a clue!!).

And finally Yay for Vlogs (and G-logs) that make me feel awkward but allow us to connect wherever we are in the world.

Water for Elephants

First off I need to say that I read books for pure enjoyment. Sometimes I crave a deep a meaningful read, sometimes something light and fluffy, sometimes a suspense, sometimes something with a life message...I like most genres thriller, crime, chick-lit, sci-fi, fantasy.

I sometimes manage to miss the symbolism. I do fall in love with characters and styles of writing. At times I feel like I am having some kind of affair with a story as I rush to get the kids to bed and do my chores so I can jump into a book. My poor husband becomes almost invisible and somewhat neglected until I sadly get to the end of the book.

So...Water for Elephants - how I liked this story!

I have a soft spot for the older generation, especially sweet old men. I have such respect for the lives they have lived and the things they have seen. I do however have an extreme fear of getting old myself. I mean I won't mind if I manage to be blessed with good health, and a body and mind that work fine. But things like a body that won't do what you need it to, or a mind that torments you with what is real and not real. And alzheimers scares the bajaysus out of me.

As you can imagine then, Jacob touched my heart. A 90 (or is it 93) year old man whose body has slowed and mind plays tricks on him as he recalls the life that he has lived and the chain of events that lead to his time in the circus.

He has a love for animals and helps those less fortunate. Falls for the wrong gal. Deals with the dramas of a bi-polar/cruel lover's husband. Works for a tyrant.

This book is sad and touching with an ending that made me smile.

A very satisfying read. Any book that makes you warm and fuzzy is worth a read.

Am looking forward to seeing the movie.

I have totally ~~stolen~~ borrowed this idea from Jodie Hedley-Ward, writer of You Sexy Mother (and other follow up inspiration books). This idea has come from her latest news letter...

I sometimes think that if I could travel back in time there are so many things I would tell myself...wear sunscreen, love my toned body (untouched by gravity or childbirth), don't light that cigarette etc

But Jodie's message is applicable to the ME in the present. About how to live fearlessly. About how we are often 'held back' by fear, apprehension, worry, judgement. If your 85 year old self could write a letter to TODAY/young you what would it say...

Here's mine:

Dear 2011 Lyns
LIVE life. Enjoy every day. Do not spend time worrying about what happened yesterday or what may happen tomorrow, to get the most out of life you need to deal with today.
Talk with your husband, and listen (he is a clever man!). Hug him, kiss him.
Give yourself to friendships that make you smile and feel loved.
Adore your kids. Giggle and play. Keep telling them how much you love them. They are miracles! Help them to be the best they can be.
Be kind to yourself. Accept that life is made of many seasons. Today's one may be tough but make the most of it.
Sometimes medication is okay.
Pray. Meditate. Dream.
Try things that thrill you even though you are afraid.
Enjoy what you have, share it if you can. Don't worry about what you don't have.
SIMPLIFY
Move your butt, daily. Dance with the kids, do yoga, walk the dog...just keep moving.
Find something to be grateful for EVERYday.
Exercise your brain.
Don't spend time worrying about what people think. Wear what you like, sing loud (even though you can not sing), say what you feel needs to be said (with love).
Have more fun with your family. Don't be concerned about being silly, there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a family play and laugh together.
Visit beautiful places.
S L O W down. Notice the small stuff.
Ask for help if you need it.
Aim high.
Eat and drink delicious things. Eat more fresh foods.
Be true to yourself. Do not be limited by your fear of failure.
Create an abundance of happy memories. LOVE yourself and your LIFE.

How's my day going??

Thanks for asking...it kinda SUCKS. (but could be worse I guess)

Jean-Claude is away which just adds a slight 'edge' to the kids behavior (I don't blame them, he is an awesome Dad and they miss him).

I set the alarm early as I had to get the car into the mechanics for a service by 8.30. This may not be early for you, but we NEVER leave the house before 8.30.

So of course today the kids slept late - typical, the one day I have to be up early and they sleep late (so could have had a sleep in...).

We do however manage to get our crap together and leave the house by 8.10.

On the way to mechanics, a car decides that they want to be in our lane so pull in and side-swipe us. Luckily just a nudge. All happened in slow motion. Actually couldn't believe that it was happening. Thank goodness for a horn as I blasted it.

The driver carried on. When we got to a set of lights I jumped out of the car hoping to get insurance details. Jean-Claude has since asked me what the heck I was thinking doing that!! But no need to worry as they just drive off and I am left with my mouth wide open.

Drop car at mechanics. Walk to train station and head to the mall with kids. Again, obviously not thinking as my Rangi HATES the mall. Bless him today he is good. We go to a 3D movie. It was not very good, but filled in time.

Mechanic rings and asks if we have a whole heap of $$money$$ laying round! Ummm NO, repairs will have to wait, just do the service.

Head back to train station with two tired kids who decide to scream once on the train to the obvious annoyance of the lady who is on her phone close by.

Get back to car, dragging kids. Pay for service.

Take Bubble to preschool.

Come home, ignore all work that should be done. Quickly make some bread (to make it seem like I am house-wife extraordinaire) then sit down and read book.

Crazy things have been happening in this house for the last month or so. I may have been taken over by the spirit of a 1950's housewife...

Washing is done

Playdoh made for kids

Extra dinner cooked and chucked in the freezer

Bread made...from scratch...NO breadmaker!

Dinner for tonight has been cooking all day in crock pot

Brown yuck bananas made into dinosaur muffins (well kinda, they stuck, so are just the hint dinosaur'ish)

Apples that weren't very yummy have been stewed

Plans to get out the sewing machine later and do some running repairs

Yikes - crazy eh?!

This may not last which is why I am sharing my moment of amazingness with you now

Well I do, it just doesn't work.

Rangi somehow stopped it working (along with the dash lights, and the heater now has to be reset every trip)

So this morning I got to listen to "Rain, rain go away..." all.the.way.to.Simoney's

It's about a 25 minute trip

Today it is raining (hence the song) BIG time.

So relieved when she rung to see if I wanted to get out of the house.

It was such a nice morning.

We drank tea and ate a scone (or 2) which I made, and they were pretty good, and dairy-free - check out Feeding Emma, a cool new blog with allergy friendly recipes.

Touchy, Feely, Sentimental...

Sometimes life just gets a little bland. Same old, same old. Kids scraping, dishes to do, clothes to wash (always clothes to wash), dog to walk, nappies to change, dinner to make...and it keeps raining.

And in amongst all this ~~we?~~ I forget just how bleedin lucky I am

I have EVERYthing I need - kids to love, a husband that is a-mazing, a roof over our head (albeit a rented one), a crazy dog, a loving family, enough money to pay the bills and put food on the table, new friendships, friends from home that come visit or are thought of daily regardless of the distance.

I have nothing 'flashy' but have never been materialistic - just need to remind myself of this as I pull on my 'not-the-latest-fashion' clothes and shoes. Things do not matter, they could be gone in a moment (or in an earthquake...) and I really would not care - except if I lost all my clothes because that would be a terrible sight for all!!

My most special treasures are those that can walk up and give me a hug and say I Love You.

It is embarrassing to admit, but when I read truly sad and heartbreaking stories of others I realise how much I have. How fortunate I am.

These stories/blogs/news reports make me linger a little longer in my children's cuddles - til they squirm and beg to be let go, and tell my husband how much I love him.

I should be grateful everyday, instead of being a spoilt brat!

Anyways, I am LUCKY and very very GRATEFUL.

Rant about Facebook...Users

I usually choose the route least bumpy. I don't really like to be overly opinionated on things for fear of offending someone.

But this week I have something(s) to say:

Please do not air your dirty laundry on Facebook. If you would not ring me to tell me about it, don't splatter it all over ALL of your friends home pages. It lacks class and self-respect, and respect for someone that you loved enough to marry and have babies with. I understand that you both may be hurting but this is turning into a train wreck. Once it is in "print" it is hard to take back those hurtful/nasty comments. It does not make me want to "side" with one of you over the other. It just makes me SAD for you both, and your kids, and your friends and family.

Do not give your pre-teens permission to have a Facebook page and then send me a friend request. I will not confirm. I know that sometimes the stuff that shows up on my homepage is for grown-ups (even I blush). I do not think it is kid appropriate. I love your kids, I really do, but I still won't accept them as Facebook friends. They can email us, write us letters, Skype us, call us on the phone. (Feel free to remind me of this when my kids grow up - you can tell me "I told you so" as I argue with them constantly as they badger me for a page!!! I'm not there yet and realise I am speaking from my own inexperience here...hope I don't have to swallow my words!!).

And while on the subject of Facebook (which I actually don't have a problem with - just some of the ways people choose to use it) please think carefully before you post a comment etc. Think about if it will affect someone else in a negative way.

Lest we forget

This morning we braved the rain...but not the early morning!! We attended our local ANZAC Day remembrance. I always find it so touching.

I do take the time to think of those who have fought for our freedoms.

Especially to think of my Grandfather. He survived WWII but gave up a lot. The stress of being a POW (who escaped once, but was recaptured). We never spoke in detail about what he went through, but it haunted his life and ours. Eventually it made him a sick man. The tragedy of war.

My grandparents moved to Australia many many years ago, but through the magic of Google I was able to track down this photo of him, as well as find a book that refers to him and the Patrol Group he was a part of. (Back Row second from the left)

The new game Bubble made up yesterday while I was reading PJ's blog. It's called BOO!!! I scroll through posts and every time Bubble sees that gorgeous dog she shouts BOO! very excitedly. Hope you don't mind Kristy?!!?

Dumb Diet Stuff

Did you know I was 3 years STRICTLY dairy free while I was feeding my babies (a year and a half per babe)??

And I never stuffed up. I was super careful as I knew if I ate anything that had dairy in it my babies would suffer...and as a result so would we!!

But now I need to be dairy free for myself, do you think I can stick to it??? NO!! So this morning I am once again crippled over in pain (tummy), unable to walk tall due to the pain. And I knew I was eating dairy, I mean you don't get much more dairy than a Cadbury's easter egg. Oh and I did it the day before too - dumb eh!!

You would think that the hours of pain would out weigh the minute of guilty pleasure - but I have no will power. It's kind of a gamble as some days I can do it with little effect. This is due to having a sensitivity - I think perhaps my tummy can deal with a little dairy very occasionally, but overload it and I pay.

This morning as I hobble around I have been wondering why I bother even going to the doctor if I am not going to take their advice! Why fork out for a visit, I might as well just sit at home and google my symptoms instead.

I actually think it is a kind of rebellion, being told you can't have something makes it just seem way more desirable. Part of the reason for my "naughtiness" yesterday i think was triggered by my visit to the doc from which I have been advised an ever stricter diet. Muh - more label reading, more starving myself when at others peoples places while trying not to make them feel bad cause they can't cater for my ridiculous dietary requirements.

If it were someone else I would think they were silly. If you can avoid feeling like crap and improve your health just by avoiding dairy and a ~~long~~ list of additives, just bleedin do it!!

I am just being a spoilt brat!!! Feeling sorry for myself. Not looking forward to the days/hours I will spend at the grocery store reading labels.

So again I say MUH - oh and Geez Lyns get.over.it!!

Morning!

I am a routines person. My mornings MUST start the same every day (with slight variation allowed for sleep-ins, or cooked breakfasts in the weekend).

Basically I stay in bed til I get dragged out by Bubble or Rangi. Make them their breakfast. Then a black coffee and two slices of wholegrain toast with marg and raspberry jam for me.

Yell at the kids to get back to the table and finish their breakfast.

Head to the computer with my breakfast and read your blogs over toast and coffee.

And even though it is Sunday morning, and I never knew Sundays started soooo early BK (before kids) today is the same. I love my routine.

Thought I would have won lotto...I didn't. And I would have shared it with you (well done a really awesome giveaway at least). Instead I got a bonus line of strike, which is better than nothing. Just kind of changes my plans for today - no chartered plane whisking me and the family off to an exotic location. I would have a pile of good books to read. Stroll on the beach with my love. . .

So back to reality. I will ~~yell at~~ organise the kids so we can get to church on time. Then back home for a relaxing family day - still sounds like a good plan to me.

For fear of it being said again (as I think we may have already overloaded Facebook with all our comments and links)...but I am loving Walk 4 CHCH tomorrow. Can not get over people's generosity. It feels like Telethon watching the total collected going up and up (as at 8.37PM $4472). "Thank you very much for your kind donation, thank you very much, thank you very very very much" (hope I am not the only one out there that LOVED a good Telethon??!!) Thanks Gail for your awesome idea and all your hard work.

Love the fun that was had with a cheap pack of dinosaurs...just add sticks, petals, ice, stones, leaves.

Had the most amazing afternoon at the park with the kids. Look how sweet they are playing together and running around burning off all that energy. All while I got to lie in the Autumn sun watching, smiling and getting the occasional body slam as they ran back for a snuggle and a kiss.

Adoring the fun I have with Rangi one on one while Bubble at preschool. Always felt like number 2 missed out on that Mummy time, but think he is getting his now. Also love how Buzz Lightyear, Dinosaurs, dog and Roman Gladiators all get to play together!!

Loving a delicious and easy recipe that is now a reg on our dinner table.

Love how much this wee guy loves his party invite from his special friend Scrag. He goes to it about 10 times a day. I caught him admiring it today...Simoney you may have to send us more!!!!

So loving that my gorgeous girl told me this week that I am the best Mummy in the whole wide world and she gave me her special teddy bear because she said I was special. Wow, seriously made my week. Now she comes in every morning to make sure Rosie (the bear) is in bed with me.

My brain is in a muddle - not sure the reason, could be sleep deprivation, could be change of season, could be that the kids are up and down in their moods.

But anyway, in a muddle I am. Here's a glimpse...

Ants are still here - not in the droves they were but still see the little critters in my pantry. They make my skin crawl. On the positive side my pantry is pretty organised now.

I have signed up to do the 16km Walk for CHCH. I am pretty unfit - this could be a disaster! I have been out walking most nights, and the distance wouldn't worry me if it were on flat land, but NO we get to hike up 4 volcanoes/hills/mountains. Worth it for my friends and family in Christchurch. Still can't believe what they are going through down there, I think they are all heros for getting themselves and their families through it - so suppose I can walk the walk! As a group we have raised $2200 + just under 2 weeks to go.

Loving that I can heal Rangi's hurts with a kiss.

I did it again - took both kids to the supermarket. Must have had a momentary lapse in sanity. It sucked. Rangi performed BIG time. A marathon of tantrums! Oh and joy of joys, one the preschool Mums that I really don't know at all was there to witness a few of them - awesome!! Bless the kind woman who offered to help me to the car with my groceries while I tackled Rangi and tried to hold his hand, 4 bags of groceries and Bubble (by the way Bubble was a star, my amazing helper). I told lovely woman I was fine (which surprisingly I was), but I could tell her offer was non-judgemental and it made my day a little brighter.

This morning I did my grocery shop online = bliss!!!!

Is it ok to lie to children so you can get them to tell you the truth??? Probably not eh?! Bubble going through a "story-telling" phase. In an effort to get her to tell me the truth I said "Is that what I'm going to see when I check the camera I have in this room?" She spilled the truth and I left the room feeling a little worried about my techniques. Gave Jean-Claude a good laugh though.

Both kids loving helping in the kitchen at the moment. The other night instead of shooing them away I let them help cut up the vege. They seem to like having a big job to do.

We have 2 1 pet praying-mantises. It hangs out on the box-seat by the back door. Its weird little head following us as we go in and out the door. He is a kind of browny colour which I'm guessing is due to them growing up on the wooden seat. As a kid I remember catching them and putting them in jars with a paper lid (with holes in) - seems so cruel now. Bubble has named him Tim.

Rangi has been coming into our bed every night for the past fortnight I think. Trying to get him back to his bed doesn't work. He has teeth coming through so I guess that could be the reason (Yep - he's 2 and a half and still has 4 teeth to come in, and they are near the front of his mouth, weird). Now he thinks he owns the bed and had a huge tantrum at me the other morning shouting at me to "Get out". Think it is time to get him back to his bed at all costs.

What games do your kids play? Bubble likes to play teachers, Mums and Dads, Princesses and Princes, and.......Old People. The last one cracks me up. Where do kids come up with this stuff? The big kids from next door come over and all 5 of them hobble around and talk in "wobbly" voices.

My kids love to sing and dance. Am trying to find a dance class I can take Bubble to that doesn't cost an absolute fortune. We really want to encourage the things that interest them, sad that money has to play such a big part in us being able to do that or not.

I'm turning into the "Radio Guy" (if you are from Christchurch you know what I mean), not putting him down at all. Always loved to see him around the city. But I have some good tunes on my ipod which I play semi-loud while out walking, have to keep reminding myself not to sing out loud (cause I'm such a terrible singer!) and not to break into dance (am also a terrible un-co, no rhythm at all, dancer). There are some good songs about at the moment!

Am loving my walks.

Wee bit over the daily argument my two kids are having at the moment. It consists of Bubble yelling PINK and Rangi getting mad grumpy and pushy yelling BLUE back. Goes on and on. Not sure how this one will be solved??

You can lead a boy to the toilet but you can't make him wee

I told myself I was going to take the same approach for toilet training Rangi as I did with Bubble. Wait til he is interested and just go with it. But Bubble so wanted to be a big girl. So wanted to wear knickers - she even yelled (yip YELLED) it out to Santa at a Christmas parade...I want knickers please Santa!! It was a breeze. Out of nappies to knickers, and I can count on one hand the number of times we had "accidents", and most of those have been as she has got older and is too busy to go. Oh, and no night time issues - ever, just said she didn't want to wear a nappy to bed anymore and that was that - lucky eh!?

But Rangi...hmmmm Rangi. He wants the undies, but that's where it ends.

Bribery does NOT work with him. He soooo wanted a lollipop, just had to wee on the toilet. He was excited, super excited.

He wee'd all over the floor at least 5 times this morning, huge puddles (how can he have that much wee?). He changed undies so many times. I kept super calm - really! I think he just isn't ready.

But I am a bit disappointed. I would love him to be out of nappies.

And I cringe slightly when this topic comes up - not with my good friends, I am happy when it is going well for them (btw - this has nothing to do with any recent conversations ;) ). But rather by "those" people - usually strangers or older family members. And this shouldn't bother me...but it does, a little bit. As Mum's we don't get many pats on the back. No boss handing over a pay rise, or a performance appraisal. No "thanks for all your hard work on that project, have the afternoon off". I know I am doing a good job (most the time - well I think there is more good than bad anyway), but if I am honest there is something about that feeling you get when someone tells you how well you've done.

Anyways, that won't be happening for quite some time in the toileting department. We have decided to not push the issue. To continue with our original plan. No point trying to get him to wee in the loo when he obviously just doesn't understand his body yet. And I will make an effort not to take any comments personally or think less of myself should the topic come up again. I'm gonna say, yep that's my 2 and a half year old son in nappies, sucking on a dummy, eating McDs, watching TV... :)

How's the undies vs. nappy issue going in your house? (promise not to be jealous or defensive!!!!!) Oh, and if you have any suggestions about toilet training boys I would ♥ to hear them.

what the worse way for me to start my day, it is:

To not get any sleep (or very little, always over-exaggerate).

To have a mini Buzz Light Year jabbed into to me with Rangi mumbling "...and beyond"

To have Rangi sneak into bed at 4 am and spend the rest of the morning wriggling and kicking.

To have Stanley the amazing watch dog bark his head off at 2 am

To walk half dazed to the pantry to be greeted by an infestation of ants. Hundreds of the wee bug-gers, and now I feel like I am covered in them even though I have "dealt" to the majority.

To realise I will have to cancel yoga today as instead I get to pull out everything in the pantry.

To know that all I want to do is crawl back into bed.

Oh and to ring my husband and blame him for ALL of it - even though it is not his fault. He must be wondering what the heck is going on with his crazy wife!!! Apology will follow shortly (after I have my coffee!).

And to see when re-reading this post that it is not in chronological order...normally I would change it, but really it is just a reflection of my muddled morning brain.

I have written two posts about the terrible Earthquake that rocked my home city last week. But I have a heavy heart and soul and my words were not enough to describe my feelings or to do justice to what my family and friends are going through. I am also aware of how easy it is to over sensationalise - I do not want to do that.

Anyway, this is my third attempt - maybe this one will get posted??!!

First of all I need to say that I feel blessed to have come up to Auckland when we did. My family has been saved twice from these disasters. If I indulge in the what ifs, I can say that had we stayed my husband could quite possibly not be here as his office was destroyed (no one was in there in his place thank goodness). But we were here and I am thankful.

I am also feeling guilty that I am not there to help my friends who are going through tough times. Not sure what I could have done: dig, cook meals, offer a bed and shower and laundry, look after kids, a shoulder to cry on, give hugs....

I am so proud of my family and friends. They have been brave, they have helped out where they can and they are surviving through trying times.

My husband rang me last Tuesday to let me know what had happened. Panic set in and I rang my Mum, she had been in Opawa at the time of the quake. She had tried to comfort some high school girls (sisters from Heathcote) and tried to get them back to their home. I am proud of her for doing this. She did not get home til 6.30 that night after 5 and a half hours of driving in a war zone. Her wee work car was put to the limit as she drove through water and 4WD territory. She is safe, but I think the realisation of what she had been through did not hit her til days later.

Dad was fine, he was at home in Rangiora which is relatively untouched. Stressful times as he waited for Mum to get home, but he knew she was safe.

I had a phone conversation with a friend that I will never forget. The distress in her voice as she could not get to her son (5 years old) and had no idea how he was. Thank God he was fine, but I can not imagine how she must have felt in the time she waited to have him back home with her.

Many friends have lost their homes. Some have relocated. Some are working hard as Police and Firemen doing a job I do not envy and am so thankful for people like them. I am also thankful to their families who have to carry on while their husbands are off working - such a sacrifice they are all making.

Up here we feel quite helpless. We have offered for any of our friends and family to come and stay when/if they need a break. We are donating where we can. We are praying. And we are sending our love.

I saw several shooting stars this weekend while we were away camping. I made a wish on each one for our family, friends and all of Christchurch.

A month back I got a lovely box left at my back door by my very excited daughter.

Her and the 7 year old twin boys from next door had made this for me.

It says "I love you Mum in the hole wade world from Lucy".

Bubble must have dictated to twin 1 or twin 2.

All tied up with string.

And what was inside???

A rock, some petunias, and a gardening fork thingy.

This warmed my heart, made me smile and be so thankful for my thoughtful girl and the lovely neighbours.

I returned the gardening implement later that day!!

The things you learn about your children while driving...

Bubble broke the following news to me a couple of days ago.

Mummy, my Prince is looking for me and when he finds me I am going to go and live with him. Don't worry though I will still come and visit you.

Oh, is he going to be looking for long?

He has been looking for me since the day I was born. Not sure when he will find me, but when he does I'm going with him to be a Princess.

Do you think you can wait til you are grown up?

My letter to the "prince" who is looking for my girl

Dear Prince,
When you are lucky enough to find my daughter (who has always been our princess) you better look after. You better not break her heart or there will be consequences. You better treat her like a princess every day of her life. You better not find her until she is much older - preferably in her late 20's - but at least old enough to have had a whole lot of good clean fun before she settles down. And I hope your castle is big enough for me and her father to visit regularly!

I can't move...well not much

Seriously I am hobbling around today (well yesterday when I wrote this!). In pain to bend down and put away dishes on the bottom shelf. Can't put on Rangi's nappy. Have to slowly lower myself to the toilet seat. Climbing up/down stairs is awful. But I am pleased with myself.

Yesterday I decided to go back to yoga. I use to LOVE it. The quiet time to myself. Stretching my body. Challenging myself.

Then I had kid number one and took quite a break.

I returned a year or so later and was enjoying it until I felt dreadfully nauseous and dizzy - the next week I found out I was pregnant with Rangi.

My sister owns 2 Bikram Yoga studios in Auckland (east west bikram yoga) so really I have no excuse for not having gone ages ago. Except that it has been on my "too hard" list, trying to juggle child-care around a class time that suited my lazy ass.

Yesterday both kids were in preschool in the morning, so off I went to a 9.30 class in Newmarket. Man was I nervous. I even rang my sis and said "I am so fricken nervous I am shaking". Not sure why I was so worked up. Might have been worried about the heat (this yoga is done in a 38 degree room) or the fact that I am so fat and unfit that I felt I would make a fool of myself.

Anyhow, I got to the studio. Put on my yoga gear, took a quick squiz at the other people who were there - whew there were newbies, young, older (like me), men, women (like me).

I sweated my way through the 90 minute class. Had to sit out a few poses - which is competely normal, even for long-timers. I enjoyed the peace and the focus. I enjoyed the challenge. Even enjoyed that I was dripping wet.

It is a class where you focus only on yourself. In fact that was my biggest challenge: 90 minutes of staring at my body in the mirror. My body is out of shape, and I don't like it. But I haven't done much to help it - so this is a step in the right direction.

Will I be going back??? - YES siree!! For as much as I am pathetic today, I did LOVE it. The poses are challenging...some I enjoy and really push myself. Some I am crap at and I will take joy in being able to do it a little better each time.

Night time/mare

In this house, bedtimes have turned into a nightmare that have me and Jean-Claude seriously exhausted/frustrated and in need of a stiff drink!

I don't know what has happened to bring us to this point, but regardless here we are. YELLing at our kids to get to bed. My blood pressure jumps, my heart races and all I want is for my little angels (said through gritted teeth) to go to sleep as I am tired and am officially off-duty.

And if I'm honest (which I always am with you) I turn quite nasty. Snapping at my husband. Crying as I lay beside my son as after an hour or two I'm so over it I will do anything...anything!

Last night we took Bubble from her bed (Rangi and Bubble share a room) and put her in the spare room as she was definitely causing Rangi to rev up. Then tried to get Rangi to bed.
He was not having a bar of it.
I tried lying with him.
Didn't work.
I ended up shutting the door.
He screamed, cried and knocked on the door.
When I could take no more (5 minutes max) I went back in, scooped him up and lay him down.
By then he was exhausted and off to sleep he went...9.30pm.

Then I have to get ready for the next day, oh and try and fit in some quality husband-wife time...

Anyways, I'm over it. Jean-Claude is over it. The neighbours are probably over it.

We need a plan of attack - but I'm too tired to come up with one (did I mention both angels made their way into our bed early this morning??)

Rangi has never really been that great at going to bed. He did get better for a while there (ah it was bliss).

Bubble has been great since about age 2...but she has entered a "too big for her boots" stage and just doesn't want to play by the rules. She is great at creating drama, and a pro at fake crying. Positive reinforcement (aka bribery) always worked great for her in the past - but it seems that testing boundaries is more attractive at the moment.

I am dreading tonight - but will fake happiness. Ooze calmness. Smother them with love and kisses. Pray for patience. Try not to yell and scream...and maybe, just maybe tonight they will be perfect angels who drift off to sleep and leave their Mum and Dad to enjoy some time together.

Indecision

Not sure if this is limited to only my family (not my immediate, perfect little family of four, rather my extended family), but we are always in the midst of indecision when we get together. We are too scared to say what we would like to do at the risk of offending someone else, stepping on someone else's toes.

It absolutely does my head in. All this "I don't mind". So I make a call, only to find that, although not willing to make a decision, there is no keeping quiet the unhappiness at the decision made. ARGH!!

This year I want to be free of this. If there is something I would like to do, I am going to say it. If it doesn't suit others that is fine. If someone else has an idea I am willing to whole-heartedly give it a go.

If I have something on my heart I am going to share it - tactfully of course. I LOVE my family - but we are an oversensitive bunch at times (that said there are times when we are not sensitive enough).

Life is too short for unnecessary dramas.

I'm back from our holiday.

And just to make sure I totally know I am in Auckland, today is a HOT and HUMID day. I feel soggy and am sure I could be wrung out - no point hanging out the washing today!!

Had a whirlwind catch up with friends and family. All our special loved ones crammed into 6 days of visiting. So good for the heart, but somewhat tiring. Next time I will do it different, organise a couple of group get- togethers. I feel bad for missing out people. In fact I even forgot one of my good friend's birthdays while I was there (how bad is that??!!).

Things change quite a bit in 6 months.
Babies go from teeny newborns to bonny, cuddly, snuggley, smiling bubbas. Crawlers are walking.
Christchurch has been broken and is still showing the scars. Roads closed to only residents. Friends houses cracked and buckled. Emergency clothes, food, torches packed and ready.

Other things don't change at all.
Family still embrace us.
Friends slip back into easy conversations.
Kids hug (run into each other's arms actually) and play like they saw each other yesterday.

My husband went off on his annual ~~boys~~ men fishing trip and had a bountiful time. So good to share kaimoana with friends and family.

I managed one mini night out with special friends (some missing due to my last minute-ness). Interesting girlie conversation over a wine and dessert. We should all do more of that!!

Lovely to see Widge in person - I love that we keep up with each others lives care of blogging, but so much better in real life. Sorry Cat forgot to pinch her butt for you. Widge, can you get Gooseman to do that please ;)

We came home all full of a cold and sore throat. The kids are exhausted and behaving accordingly. Tomorrow we will tackle the zoo, wish us luck (oh and yes phone numbers will be written on the kids arms!!).

My "things I MIGHT do" list twenty11

I am not one for new years resolutions. But I do try to focus on achieving something BIGish each year.

Perviously these have been: buy a house, get married, get pregnant, have baby, sell house, buy new house, get pregnant, travel overseas, have baby, start work, sell house, relocate to new city....

This year though I am not going to think about the BIG. Instead I am writing a list of things I MIGHT do/would like to do. Here 'tis:

1. Make something on my sewing machine.
I have not sewn since intermediate school. I was okay at it.
In fact, I have actually started a bit of "re-fashioning". Seems like a cheaper way to practice than to go out and spend a fortune on material etc. I will later post a photo of attempt number one (be kind when you see it!!).

2. Walk much much more...
So many benefits, for me physically and mentally. And my poor dog so needs the exercise.
Since I shamed myself out here, I have been walking most nights (sometimes break out into a jog...shhhh I kind of enjoy it).

3. Eat healthier
Again so many benefits.

4. Try new recipes
Oodles of recipe books that look so pretty and have been flicked through - but as yet untested. So this year I am taking a new approach. I have gone through my two recent books and turned down edges of the recipes that appeal (a good friend of mine who is a most awesome cook does this - and she must know as she helped write an amazing cook book!!).

5. Spend TIME with my husband
We have been together for 17 years, married almost 6 years. Loads has happened in that time. But one thing we have not been so good at (since kids that is) is having some time for us, nurturing our love and marriage. So this year I would love to work on this.

6. Re-prioritise
I way too often let the little, unimportant things take priority over the most important things in my life... my Husband, my kids, God. Am going to work on that. (funny, didn't know I was going to do that until I started typing). Oh and friends get a mention as they are important too!

7. Have fun, laugh lots, hug more (think my kids will groan at this as I am always stealing hugs from them), enjoy life...

So we'll see how I go. Not signing this in blood, or putting up a ticker to measure how I am going...just going to use this as reminder of some of the things I would like to try and do this year.

And yep this is a bit late in January to be posting a resolutions type list - but you'll notice I didn't say I was going to get better organised ;)

Good advice - mayonnaise jar and 2 glasses of wine

Argh...am so not one for "forwarded" emails.

Normally delete them.

Very rarely forward them on.

But this one is kinda good...

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in
a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 glasses of
wine.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front
of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty
Mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the
jar.

He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between
the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They
agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else He asked once more if the jar
was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two glasses of wine from under the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty
space between the sand. The students laughed.

Now, said the professor, as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to
recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the
important things; your family, your children, your health, your friends,
and your favourite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only
they remained; your life would still be full.'

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house,
and your car. The sand is everything else; the small stuff.
If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'There is no room
for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all
your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the
things that are important to you.'

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with
your children. Take time to get medical check-ups. Take your partner out to
dinner. Play another 18. Do one more run down the ski slope. There will
always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the
golf balls first; the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest
is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the wine
represented.

The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that
no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of
glasses of wine with a friend.'

Dairy-free...again!

I have had a somewhat *ahem* "anti-social" stomach issue for a couple of years now. Not everyday, but when it hits it is crippling. I had been on some kind of drug to try and calm it but decided that this was not really fixing the problem.

So before Christmas I went to the doctors and had a hair sample taken so that a hair-allergy test could be done.

I got the results back yesterday and am not terribly surprised at the results.

I have a sensitivity to dairy (lactose) as well as preservatives 250 and 251 (used in meat products like bacon, ham, salami etc).

Next step is to eliminate these from my diet for 4 weeks, and then to slowly reintroduce small amounts to find out where my sensitivity lies (i.e. may be able to have these things 2-3 times a week without experiencing any discomfort).

Today is day one. I am back to being dairy-free. I have been here before for my babies as both showed symptoms of being sensitive to dairy so I have been dairy-free for about 3 years in total. But darn it I love ice cream, cheese, chocolate treats, baking (ok so this will actually be a good thing). Most of all I love not reading packets to check the ingredient list!!!

I did some quick research on the two preservatives above and it was pretty scary if you believe even half of what is online. All in all this can only be good for me...right!?! Right.

Had my first black coffee this morning - it's actually pretty good.

Ciao 2010...HeLlo 2011

2010 threw a few curve balls our way, but we are still going strong (sometimes just barely holding on if I'm honest...but we ARE still going).

Curious at what 2011 has in store for us. Lots of love, laughter and happiness is what I'm praying for.

So 2010 ended well. Check out our family friendly evening here. A year ago I would not have imagined that I would get to meet these cool people and get invited over for New Years Eve!!

Then home to put VERY tired kids to bed. A few more wines while sitting outside in front of our outdoor fire. Sharing New Year with my husband and my sister - two very special people - as well as 3 cute puppy dogs who each had someone to snuggle. Jean-Claude and I had our SeVenTenth New Years snog...this was our 18th New Years Eve we have spent together (the first one was when we meet - and did NOT kiss!!). We tried to remember where we went for all our NY celebrations, but can't quite remember them all, think some alcohol may have been involved.

And wow...my kids slept til 7.30 this morning (2011 - I'm likin ya already, keep up the good work!!).

Picnic at Cornwall park (I use the word "picnic" loosely as we took the easy option and picked up McD's on our way).

Home for an afternoon snooze.

And now a roast is sizzling away in the bbq. Which will be accompanied by Simone's secret recipe mashed potatoes, yummy, hope they turn out as well as hers ;)

Jean-Claude and Bubble have raced down to the beach for a quick swim.

Yes 2011, I think we are going to get along well.

Wahoo!! I made it.

There were times where I thought this was just a passing fad, but 100 posts on (and, only a few days short off, a year later) I'm still posting.

Not that regulary.

And nothing A-mazing.

But lots of little bits and bobs about me

and my fam

and my friends.

Here's what I have learnt/done in this time... (not necessarily blog related!)

1. I am NOT a writer...wish I was, but does not come naturally to me.

2. I had hoped to be off my lovely little "happy" pills by now. But reality has kicked in and I'm going to keep them going for a while longer.

3. The abundance of patience I hoped would ooze from my every pore by now, is only bout the size of my little finger nail.

4. I heart Auckland

5. I miss Rangiora

6. I miss my friends

7. I don't like moving house. I like even less moving twice in 3 months!

8. Have finally realised that my weight loss plan (which focused on eating way too much, and moving very little) is not going to be a success - shame as could have made millions if it had worked...

9. Due to 8 I am the heaviest I have been in my life - best I do something about it!!

10. I have loved meeting blogger friends. In fact can't quite believe how many I have met and how genuinely lovely they all are.

11. I am better at meeting new friends than i thought

12. I am not crafty. I wish I was. I have great ideas...just can't make them!! Thank goodness for a talented husband who is one talented artist x

13. Marriage is awesome. Marriage is incredibly hard work

14. It is way too easy to overanalyse all the challenges of Parenthood. Think I am starting to understand that each little challenge just is what it is. e.g. He is not sleeping well FULLSTOP no point worrying on this. Try to just get through each day/night, it WILL get better.

15. Grey hair is taking over. Is this stress or old age? Should I leave them or pull them out? Argh can't fight being 36

16. I need to laugh more. Kids are good at helping with this.

17. My dog does not get enough exercise. This may somehow be correlated with 8 and 9.

18. Still waiting for the money-tree to sprout up in our backyard. If it does, promise I will share.

19. Love the logic of a 4 year-olds mind. Bubble recently planted the sesame seeds off the top of the bun of our home-made burgers. She is waiting for the bun-tree to grow.

20. Christmas is magic for kids. I am absolutely loving seeing this Christmas through the eyes of my little ones.

21. Living in the same city as my sister is fantastic. I love being able to catch up with her weekly and for her to be able to hang out with us. My kids love their Aunty.

22. My kids love their Aunty's cute dogs. Charlie dog gets up to mischief with Rangi (in fact even though Rangi says hardly anything he can say Charlie very clearly!). Zoe dog loves having cuddles with me and Bubble.

23. I have finally stopped biting my nails and they look great!

24. Bloggers pass on the bEST recipes.

25. I enjoy blogging but am not as fully into it as some of my bloggy friends. I'm happy with my few followers (who are all amazing and gorgeous!). I don't feel bad if I post infrequently. For me it is a past-time...though I do Love comments

26. I got a sewing machine for my birthday (august) but due to moving have not had it out until this weekend. I can sew a great straight line! Now to find something to make

27. Moving to Auckland has been a good move for our family. A chance to really focus on us and what is important to us - hope that doesn't sound selfish

28. No matter what else is happening in your life, the laundry still needs to be done, the bills keep coming, and the kids always want to be fed.

29. As this is my 100th post I should probably have a give-away. Sorry but I'm just not that organised...but I will endeavour to do one soon x

Found them while unpacking (yep still sorting through all the ~~crap~~ treasures we have yet to unpack). They were actually my sister's but I am the hoarder in the family, hence why I have them. Can't remember what they are called though???

Cute eh!

Kept the kids amused for a quite a while and then gave them something new to argue over!!

My kids seem to be suffering from LSS today. Thanks Gail for giving it a name. I have decided to use the acronym as sounds medical...almost. Mostly they are tag teaming tantrams, although there have been a few overlaps. Music was a blast with lots of tears and MINE!!! being yelled constantly. Oh and that is sunscreen smeared through Rangi's hair in above photos.

One is mid-tantram at the moment. I did try giving him love and attention, but that is not what he needed so I type this with the drone in the background.

And I am able to smile as in half an hour I am off to the hairdressers and when I get home they will be in bed - or almost in bed - and I will have had a chance to miss them. I found my hairdresser care of The Undercover Bloggers, and she is Awesome!!

Oh, and have any of your children got those cool puzzle books? My Dad bought the kids one on his last visit. With my back turned yesterday morning they pulled all but one of the puzzles apart...ARGH!!!! I have put all the pieces in a bowl and will wrap them up for Dad when he comes to visit at Christmas - a good chance for some Grandfather/Grandchildren bonding ;)

Lastly, did you know this is post number Ninety-9 for me. Momentous don't you think!!

Parenting Low-light

It's been a loooooooong week. Truly, thank God it is Friday!

The low-light of my week was losing Bubble (don't worry, found her again and all is well). My all time worse parenting moment happened on Wednesday when we decided a trip to the zoo would be the perfect way to spend the day (had been solo-parenting since Mon and kids were missing their Dad and acting up a tad so REALLY needed to get out and about).

While at the playground (the one with the big "egg" slide) my Dad rang with a computer problem. Still being somewhat responsible I showed Bubble where I would be sitting and carried on helping Dad. Kept my eyes on them (I swear) especially Rangi as he is a runner. But Bubble is so good. But she got disorientated and couldn't see me.

And now for the miracle...for some reason before we left for the zoo I flashed on a piece of advice from one of my best friends, my parenting "guru". She writes her cell phone number on her kids arms in marker pen when they go to public gatherings/crowded places. I have never done this before as Bubble sticks to me like glue. Lately though Rangi has got a bit too brave and has taken to running ahead of me - man he is fast!!

So, on Wed morning I decided to write the number on their arms and explained to Bubble that if we lost each other that this was my cell number.

And it worked!! A lovely lady (Ms J) found Bubble and rang me. Just at the point where panic was starting to sweep over me and I had a horrible thought "Oh God this is like the movies" and was yelling out Bubbles name.

I was feeling guilty as I explained she never walks off. I did manage to thank her. And she actually praised me for writing my number down, thinking it was a brilliant idea.

I then rang my friend and through a few tears thanked her again for sharing her parenting advice (she is an awesome Mum!!!!).

My wee man went to preschool for the first time ever yesterday.

And it was Bubbles first day at their new preschool - which she seems to love and also seems to love having her wee brother there to ~~boss~~ look after.

Rangi was very excited (well I think he was given that he still doesn't say much at all, has learnt MINE...) I put his backpack on him so I could take a photo before we left. Then I took it off him to put him in his car seat and in true 2 year old style he threw a massive tantrum and screamed/cried/yelled all the way to preschool.

Put backpack back on him which calmed him. He was a star - a kiss and off he trotted to play.

Bubble was also fantastic which is awesome after all the tears and clinging that we had gone through when saying goodbye at her last preschool.

With 2 hours to myself I trotted off to the supermarket and looked at labels, sussed out bargains, filled the trolley and didn't have to turn into psycho-shopping-mum! Bliss!! Oh how easily I am pleased!

Returned to preschool to find Rangi fast asleep. He had got upset when his big sis had gone off to 4 year old time - which is actually quite sweet. The teachers cuddled and sang to him and he drifted off to sleep.

Looking forward to Friday afternoon and a few more hours to myself - might try and find something a bit more exciting than grocery shopping to do.

Thank God - I have the internet again. It took 6 days and I missed it. I did miss catching up on your blogs, but I have also come to realise how much I use my computer everyday. To look up google-maps, check the weather, search for a carpet cleaner, look for a daily bargain, pay my bills, and email my friends/family.

But that is not what I was going to post about!!

I wanted to tell you we are in our new home.

It is even better than I remembered it from our initial visit. It FEELS like home. We have unpacked more in the few days we have been here than we did in the 3 months we were in Ellerslie. It is not flashy at all. An old villa type house with wonky door handles and light switches.

Amazing ceilings.

A small but gorgeous backyard. Porches (I love porches).

And neighbours that we have met already.

Neighbours that seem normal - bonus! No hammer wielding attacks here (I hope), no drug deals out our kitchen window, no people banging on our door to call the cops (see hammer attack). And please know that I am not judging here! Ellerslie IS a great place, we were just in an unfortunate spot - our neighbours are the bane of all the lovely locals. And we are renting so why wouldn't we move? Jean-Claude and I could cope with it but it was not something we needed our kids to be around!! But again this was not what I was posting about!

Our kids are happy here too! They have a massive room to share. Fairy lights as a night light - Bubble and Rangi loves these - they have fairies in their room! Bubble wakes happy and says she loves being here.

The tantrums are still happening, the kiddie fights still take place a number of times a day, I still yell more than I should, the kids still whinge (we haven't turned into the Walton's!!), but we really are very happy here thank you!

We have our first guests next week (thanks to U2 concert) and are looking forward to many more coming to stay with us.

I should be packing boxes, instead I am having a coffee and getting my last fix of blogland and facebook for a week.

Today we move.

I have a cold and a bad case of PMS.

Poor everyone else in my family as I am far from easy to live with today.

Muddy fingers

Little girls that dress themselves (yesterday: 1 x dress, 2 x skirts, 1 x shorts and 1 x top, today: 1 x singlet, 3 x tee, 2 x skirts and 1 x dress at the start of the day - currently 1 x skirt only, all other clothes strewn across the house ready for me to wash!!)

My new look blog - just seems fresher, more summery and ps I always remember that my lovely Nana loved these flowers so that makes me smile!

Moving in 2 more sleeps - this is the beach that is a 1.3km downhill walk from our new home = happiness!!

Cupcakes - these are so so so yum from Petal in Newmarket...worth a visit!

Parenting Place - a great place to get a reasonably priced coffee (or honey,lemon,ginger drink) and fudge cake. And fantastic relaxed play lounge for the kids. They also have heaps of resources, books, workshops etc to help with those parenting issues we sometimes have!!

A new barbecue and my husband's willingness to try and cook every single dinner on it!

A cool cafe discovered with great friends when last in Christchurch (Addington Coffee Coop)

Rangi opening a present from friends. He was so excited to get Bob the builder socks and wallet and a wee book. He insisted on taking the wallet to The Parenting Place this morning and even paid for our morning tea with his Bob card (thank you lady at cafe who humoured him and put the card through the eftpos machine and gave him the pin pad to push buttons on!!)

Grocery Bill - comments, thoughts welcome

I clicked onto Facebook the other Sunday morning and saw a comment posted by my amazing friend - lets call her Ms F (that's F for fab, frugal, frustrated, f.....)

so husband tells me I spent $8000 on groceries over the last 12mths like thats a bad thing, wants me to reduce it by 10%! An average of $154 per wk for a family of 5 for breakfast lunch & dinner, & includes nappies. Anyone else out there think I could do better!?

Ummmm..... so once we all get over the initial shock and desire to *bash* Ms F's hubby (who is also a great friend) and the amazement that she is doing her weekly shop for this amount and still cooks delicious meals, my question is...why does it cost so much to feed our families??

We live in a country celebrated as a primary producer. We have more sheep than people. Milk by the vat load. (yeah I know world demand!!). Hectares of fruit and vegetables. Yet I struggle to reign in my weekly spending.

Ms F's comment got 36 or so responses. Most in envy of her spending for a family of 5. And there were some good suggestions to help try and cut the bill...

The Destitute Gourmet was mentioned.
Go Vego (I do think a vegetarian once a week is a great option - but how do we get our fussy eating kids to eat, hmmm guess that is another way to save money!)

So I have a pile of unfinished posts and I am not feeling inspired enough to finish them. Mainly because life has been so busy this month and every time I go to tell you about it I actually don't know where to begin (or how to finish without writing a massive essay!).

Here's an update:

Went to Christchurch for Dad's birthday as a surprise. Had a blast!! Caught up with friends, meet beautiful babies (so so sweet). (also did a 2 minute surprise run in on Miss Widge and her family on a Sunday evening).

Back to Auckland to spend the week with our awesome friends who were visiting.

(I promise we did more than just make them watch TV)

Next weekend we flew to Queenstown to have a family mini-holiday with Mum, Dad, Nana, my sis, my brother and his wife. Beautiful place, great time with the family!

Back to Auckland.

Rangi turned 2!!!!!!! He is such an amazing wee boy. Love him!

(don't judge the cake...it did taste good!!)

Found a new home. Only a km from the beach!!

Our house sale finally settled. Such a relief. Celebratory dinner and drinks at my sister's.

Viewing for our current rented house so that new tenants can be found and our lease can be broken without having to pay two rents (argh!! praying they find tenants in time!!).

I was gifted a month trial membership at a local gym (courtesy of one of my new Auckland friends!!) and I have actually been and am not in a world of pain. Planning to make the most of this!

Now we are getting ready to pack up again...I will not be moving again for a very very VERY long time!!

Oh, and we got an invite to a cool party of family fun this Saturday - can't wait!!

So that is the month in review so far. Hope you are all doing well.

My baby is T W O tomorrow.

I love him so much.

He is adorable.

A bit of a rascal.

Gives the best boy kisses.

Loves shaking hands, giving high-5's, knuckles and the "thumbs up".

Has a wicked, wicked giggle.

Is very inquisitive.

He is a bit of a charmer...a ladies man!!

Doesn't say much at all - except for the most cutest "Mummee" in the whole entire world.

Does the funniest happy dance (kind of a jig/hop/bounce/spin).

Wakes up way too early, but makes up for it with his giggles and kisses to wake me!
